DISSERTATION YEAR TEACHING FELLOWSHIPS

The College of Humanities & Social Sciences is offering two dissertation teaching fellowships for individuals completing their dissertations. The awards will be made to individuals who, in the judgment of a review panel:

· Demonstrate outstanding academic achievement
· Remain committed to a career in teaching and research at a university
· Demonstrate use of diversity as a resource for enriching the education of students

Eligible Fields
Awards will be made for scholars in the following humanities and social sciences disciplines: English, anthropology, geography, history, languages (French, Spanish, German), literature, philosophy, political science, sociology, criminology.

Arkansas State University
Arkansas State University, located in Jonesboro, Arkansas, enjoys a reputation as a quality regional institution of higher education and is recognized for offering special services to the people of the Arkansas Delta. It is the only comprehensive public university located in this region. Dedicated to teaching, research and service, the university provides students with the broad educational foundations that help develop critical thinking and analytical skills, decision-making capabilities, and communication skills.

Stipend and Benefits
· Annual stipend: $20,000 (August 15, 2008 - June 30,2009)
· Research stipend: $2,000
· Health benefits
· Assistance with securing affordable on-campus housing

Conditions of Fellowships
· Teach two general education courses in the College of Humanities & Social Sciences   each semester (one prep) and one summer course (June 2009)
· Mentor African-American students

· Cover letter outlining: academic background, commitment to teaching and mentoring   African-American students, importance of humanities and/or social science disciplines   in the lives of undergraduate students
· Academic vitae
· Graduate School Transcript
· Three letters of reference
· Letter from academic advisor verifying ABD status
